Art Pro Channel Ii Microphone Preamp

The two tube‑voltage options provide another subtle but useful variation in tonality, and the variable input impedance is invaluable for use with passive ribbon mics or other insensitive dynamic models. I know that digital cannot replicate analog hardware. It can come close though, for some simple things – reverb, chorus, atmosphere, but something like compression….I can hear the difference. Also, tube sound replicated by an algorithm…not going to happen. From an analysis point of view, there are quantum limits in nature that can’t be done digitally. For example, no computer can take an audio file and extract what sounds good….your ear does that.

It allows you to run it hard or moderately and still make adjustments from there which puts the preamp section of the Pro Channel above and beyond many of Art’s lower priced preamp alone models. Like every other mic-pre or channel strip ever made the sound is not transparent. However, what you want is a unit that imparts a pleasant sound or colors the sound in a positive way. The reason I pulled the trigger was the switchable tube plate voltage , the variable mic impedance, and I wanted the optical compressor. I couldn’t argue with the price (it’s like one – fifth the price of The Universal Audio LA 610 that you mentioned).

It gives me a very clean sound, allowing me to fully control the gain, compression, and eq. If this thing were human, I would put a ring on it. Large highly visible backlit analog VU meters accurately display input and output levels while extremely fast 10-segment LED’s display gain reduction. For added functionality, the LED’s display either average level for mastering & mixing applications or peak hold for monitoring individual sources when tracking audio. It can also subltley alter the tone of the sound. Although I haven’t spent time w/ that specific ART, their stuff is known to punch above its weight . It seems to be something that you can keep if you move up the gear chain. That is something to often happens – buy cheap and then have to replace that bit of gear the next year.

You might want to check out Gearslutz and the Dan Lavry whitepaper that is discussed there. Hey, thanks for confirming the use of the comp going in and thank you for warning me about not over-doing it as I do. I especially like how you make spending money on tone analogous to a logarithmic curve…I didn’t realize that but conceivably it seems to be the name of the game. Just because you can use one doesn’t mean you have to.

Over the years I’ve had two situations where a buzz like that was present and took some investigation to isolate and remove the problem. Any help on figuring out and suggestions would be really helpful, i’m not going to send it back and i’m confident with opening it up and replacing tubes, caps ect. This buzz however, cannot be irradiated by bypassing the compressor. If I swap the output cable to my MOTU for a pair of headphones the buzz is still there so it’s not the MOTU. If I unplug the input to the pre, the buzzing is still present, so it’s not coming from the input.
